SRH visit to iL: Facets
communication
Ten students, Professor Jutta Milde and course coordinator Lisa Richter from SRH University Heidelberg visited InnovationLab for the first time to find out more about our technology transfer platform. In addition to a tour of the new laboratories and the clean rooms in Hall L, the focus was on the exciting topic of communication.
It was an obvious choice, as the students are in the second semester of their Master's degree in Strategic Communication & Leadership. Here they learn about "all facets of strategic communication", as Jutta Milde, Professor at the Faculty of Information, Media and Design, says. The course content also includes excursions. The first took the group to the chemical giant BASF in Ludwigshafen, the second to iL in Heidelberg's Bahnstadt district. What are the specific communication challenges in the day-to-day business of a technologically oriented, smaller company at the interface between scientific excellence and industrial implementation power? What does storytelling consist of, especially in the field of science communication? What role do recipient and target group discussions, social media and media psychological factors play? How is content communicated on different channels and with which tools?
Supplement to everyday university life
"In everyday university life, the focus is placed on one part of the strategic communication process per module, and the focus here is primarily on digital media," says Jutta Milde, outlining the status quo in the Master's program, "now they have been taught at the InnovationLab that the communication elements are applied very dynamically, differently and sensitively in everyday practice. Science communication in particular requires a strategic and well-considered approach in order to convince the media and people with trust-building information."

In any case, the future communication experts were very hungry for information. They wanted to know exactly how iL communication plays out in media, social and political public relations and lobbying work, how new topics (life science technologies and clean tech) are identified, how funding projects are acquired and partners and customers landed, and ultimately how the iL business model performs successfully as a problem solver, accelerator and incubator.
Human hair is 500 times thicker
They were impressed when inspecting the new laboratories on the fourth floor and the large, neighboring Hall L. "I can now imagine how work is done in a laboratory or a clean room. The noises and lighting conditions take a lot of getting used to," said one student. iL Operations Manager Matthias Konop gave an informative and entertaining tour of the existing research infrastructure that characterizes the local competence center. Matthias explained to the SRH visitors in front of the cluster tool room, where the new, high-quality Quantum X Shape 3D printer has been in operation for several weeks: "This printer can capture nanocoatings. For comparison: a human hair is around 500 times thicker than the extremely small structures recorded here."
A lively excursion ended with an intensive discussion about modern media use and the advantages and disadvantages of external and internal communication in companies via teams, both a curse and a blessing.
Perhaps we will see SRH students again in connection with Master's theses, internships or working student positions. Well-educated and good communicators are welcome everywhere.
