Cluster of Excellence 3D Matter Made to Order (3DMM2O)
InnovationLab as a Facilitator for Three-Dimensional Additive Manufacturing Techniques
Since 2018, the Cluster of Excellence has been jointly supported by the University of Heidelberg and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The 3DMM2O Cluster employs an interdisciplinary approach, integrating natural sciences and engineering, to research three-dimensional additive manufacturing techniques – from the molecular level to macroscopic dimensions. A key objective is the complete digitalization of 3D manufacturing and material processing.
With the new infrastructure, InnovationLab will provide approximately 40 research workstations for the scientists of the 3DMM20 Cluster of Excellence. In addition to utilizing S1/S2 laboratories, researchers will operate a new microfabrication tool. Nanoscribe's QuantumX employs the technique of Two-Photon Polymerization (2PP). This technique enables users to produce microstructures with nanometer-scale precision, thereby opening up new application possibilities in photonics, microfluidics, and biology.



Our Research Infrastructure
Our laboratories are specifically tailored to the needs of research groups, start-ups, and spin-offs. Across a total area of approximately 6,200 square meters, we operate fully equipped ISO Class 7 cleanrooms, ISO Class 5 yellow rooms, S1 and S2 laboratories for biological and chemical work, physics laboratories for laser and electronics applications, as well as office workstations and coworking spaces.

Nano- and Microsystems Technology for Life Science Technologies
In February 2024, InnovationLab hosted a workshop focused on non-invasive oncological testing procedures. Representatives from Heidelberg University, DKFZ Heidelberg, Heidelberg University Hospital, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Freiburg University Hospital, University of Stuttgart, University of Münster, and Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft für angewandte Forschung convened for an exchange. Additionally, participants included key figures from the industry and start-up scene: VERAXA Biotech GmbH, faCellitate GmbH, temicon GmbH, Actome GmbH, and B9Creations.
