iL-laboratory conversion:
The furniture moves in
The newly renovated laboratory rooms at InnovationLab GmbH are coming to life. Following the completion of the extensive renovation work, which included a core refurbishment, the custom-fit furniture will be installed from last week. The laboratory furniture manufacturer Grittmann from Eppelheim has produced matching furniture to complete the equipment of the biological laboratories. Not all the furniture is new. In keeping with the motto reduce, reuse, recycle, old furniture that still fits is being reused.
Acceptance by the regional council
It will probably take three weeks to assemble the new furniture. This means that the rooms are getting ever closer to being approved by the regional council. This is essential before the laboratories can be put into operation. The safety regulations are carefully checked to ensure that work in the laboratories can proceed without accidents. To ensure that the acceptance process runs smoothly, InnovationLab has already paid meticulous attention to potential sources of danger and errors during the conversion.
The rooms have been completely renovated in recent months. It's not just the walls and floors that have been given a new shine. A new wipeable wall paint was just as important as a seepage-free, waterproof floor. The ceiling was also given a new look: perforated boards gave way to cable ducts. Pipes for oxygen, nitrogen and natural gas have been laid in the right places and are ready for use. Laboratory equipment such as digesters, electrical workbenches, clean benches and fume cupboards are already in the rooms, enabling biological research to be carried out to the latest standards.
With the new furniture moving in, the conversion work is slowly but surely coming to an end. The laboratories, which still looked like a shell a few months ago, now look like ready-to-use laboratory space again. It no longer requires any imagination to picture a wide variety of groups working here, such as students or start-ups. Renting out the space will be the next step in breathing life into the rooms and making the best possible use of them.
Detail work at the end
Once the construction work has been completed, there is still some minor work to be done, reports Matthias Konop, who is jointly responsible for the laboratories at iL. "We still have to attach safety features to the labs, such as license plates. Above all, there is still some minor work to be done," he reveals. The equipment for research and work can then also be placed in the rooms. "A lot is coming from us, but the universities are also bringing a lot with them," says Matthias. But the major conversion work is now complete. The furniture is the last major item on the list, which seemed endlessly long at the start of the conversion work. InnovationLab has achieved a lot in the last few months. Not only the core refurbishment of the rooms, but also the replacement of the ventilation system and the raising of safety standards have kept the employees on their toes.
